Stop Obama From Surrendering American Control of the Internet, Preserve Internet Freedom, [and help elect Donald Trump and other Reps]
“Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech.” Benjamin Franklin
On October 1, 2016, the Obama administration plans to surrender control of the Internet to an international consortium of #globalist “stakeholders” including Russia, China, Iran, and the 57 states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation [OIC]. [The OIC pushed thru UN resolution 1618 to criminalize any criticism of Islam with Hillary Clinton’s support.]
Surrendering control of the Internet will probably lead to the UN controlling the Internet and will almost certainly lead to censoring the Internet.
Any promises to protect freedom of expression are as reliable as “if you like your plan, you can keep your plan.”
The only way to stop this and protect freedom of expression on the Internet is for the Reps to make nonnegotiable including a law preventing Obama from surrendering control of the Internet in the spending bill that must pass by the end of September.
September is now or never to save American control of the Internet and thereby freedom on the Internet.
The Power of Ideas vs. the Rulers
Invention of the printing press in 1439 “introduced the era of mass communication which permanently altered the structure of society. The relatively unrestricted circulation of information—including revolutionary ideas—transcended borders, captured the masses in the Reformation and threatened the power of political and religious authorities; the sharp increase in literacy broke the monopoly of the literate elite on education and learning and bolstered the emerging middle class.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Gutenberg
The ability to share information and ideas led to the greatest expansion of freedom, prosperity and technological and scientific progress in human history.
Dictators, kings and the #RulingClass have struggled ever since to control the flow of information and ideas.
The Internet is the printing press on mega steroids in the ability for people to communicate with large numbers of other people, quickly, inexpensively and outside government control and without large media and publishing companies.
Some countries try to censor the Internet in their own countries with varying success. China monitors its citizens Internet activity and gives them a social media score like a credit score measuring their political loyalty to the regime. [What do you suppose Obama thinks about that?]
Even in supposedly or formerly free Europe, the governments are pressuring social media companies to suppress criticism of Islam and the governments’ mass Muslim immigration policies. European governments are even criminally prosecuting people for criticizing Islam and/or mass Muslim immigration.
However, because America controls the Internet, they cannot censor the entire Internet.
In America, Facebook, Twitter and Google discriminatorily apply their “community standards” against conservative ideas they don’t like. They also “shadow ban” i.e. hide content they do not like. The Dems on the Federal Election Commission want to regulate political speech on the Internet. Dems and Reps passed the McCain-Feingold law to regulate political speech. This blatant violation of the First Amendment, narrowly struck down by the Supreme Court, would have, by way of example, made illegal showing Dinesh D’Souza’s movie #HillarysAmerica within 60 days of the election.
As always, the last thing “rulers” want is for their “subjects” to be able to communicate freely.
Background re: the Internet
Until now the US government controlled the key aspect of the Internet, the connection between typing www.SOMETHING.com and the website for SOMETHING, in essence the Internet directory.
Presently, the Internet directory is managed by a nonprofit corporation, ICANN, under contract with the US government. Because of US government control, it is subject to the First Amendment.
ICANN could take away anyone’s Internet domain thereby taking them off the Internet. However, as much as Obama and #Globalist Washington politicians would like to take down websites such as Drudge and Breitbart, they cannot because of the First Amendment and neither can ICANN.
Obama’s plan to surrender control over the Internet
On October 1, 2016, the Obama administration plans to surrender control of the Internet directory to an international consortium of #globalist “stakeholders” including Russia, China, Iran, and the 57 states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. You can see the full list here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICANN#Representatives It’s most of the United Nations.
That ends any First Amendment protection for the Internet, including for Americans.
There is then nothing to prevent the international consortium of #globalist “stakeholders” from suppressing and removing content they do not like or removing entire websites such as Breitbart or Drudge. Any promises to protect freedom of expression are as reliable as “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan.”
Furthermore, it is highly likely the UN will sooner or later control ICANN. The international consortium of #globalist “stakeholders” is already most of the UN.
By way of example, the OIC pushed thru UN resolution 1618 to criminalize any criticism of Islam with Hillary Clinton’s support. They will push for censoring the Internet of any criticism of Islam. Liberal and leftist politicians like Hillary Clinton, Obama and Merkel will be happy to go along.
They probably won’t take down Breitbart on October 2, but rather they will gradually tighten the noose around freedom of expression.
What can we do to protect freedom of expression on the Internet?
Even if Congress were to pass a law blocking the transfer, Obama would veto it, and Senate Dems will probably filibuster the bill.
The only chance to stop Obama from surrendering control of the Internet is attach the law preventing Obama from doing so to the spending bill Congress must pass by the end of September to keep the government operating.
The Reps must make this the one non negotiable provision of the spending bill. Even 40 Rep Senators could filibuster the spending bill without this law.
Members of Congress want to get the spending bill done as quickly as possible so they can campaign for reelection. We can use that time pressure.
A Breitbart poll shows 41% against surrendering control of the Internet and 14% in favor with 44% unsure. Once the issue is explained, this will be a 70-80% issue in favor of America keeping control of the Internet to protect freedom of expression.
Not only is this a chance for the Reps to do the right thing, this is a winning political strategy. Donald Trump and every Rep running for House or Senate have the chance to stand for America and for freedom when 70-80% of the people agree.
While the Reps control both houses of Congress, the law should permanently ban surrendering control of the Internet unless and until Congress authorizes it.
The law also must also provide an effective remedy including criminal penalties and standing to sue to prevent the Obama administration from surrendering control of the Internet notwithstanding the law. The 2016 spending bill barred the Obama administration from spending money to work on surrendering control of the Internet, and the Obama administration ignored the law.
Our task is to persuade the Reps to stand up for freedom. Some members get it. Others may not understand the issue or be afraid to make a stand. #Globalist Est Reps may want the UN to control the Internet to remove annoying conservative websites such as Breitbart and Drudge that interfere with their globalist, open border plans.
Please do the following:
**Write, call and talk to your member of Congress and Senators [some Dems might join the effort too].
**Alert everyone you can, in person, by email, and on line of this issue.
**Write letters to the editor.
**Comment on online articles on the subject.
**Tweet to @realDonaldTrump.
**[Keep repeating the above.]
